Wounds: Stages of Healing
The skin limits fluid loss, regulates temperature, supports sensation and immune surveillance, and protects deeper structures from mechanical, chemical, thermal, and microbial injury. A wound compromises these functions. This course classifies common acute and chronic wounds, explains overlapping phases of tissue repair, and identifies local or systemic findings that require escalation.

Overview
After completing this course, the nurse will be able to classify common acute and chronic wounds, explain overlapping phases of tissue repair, and identify local or systemic findings that require escalation. The nurse will also be able to perform and document a structured wound assessment, select evidence-based nursing interventions, support nutrition and pressure redistribution, and collaborate on treatment directed at the wound’s cause.
Objectives
Upon completion of this independent study, the learner will be able to:
- Differentiate acute, chronic, open, closed, pressure-related, venous, arterial, neuropathic, traumatic, and surgical wounds using assessment findings.
- Sequence the major cellular and clinical events of hemostasis, inflammation, proliferation, epithelialization, and remodeling.
- Identify local, spreading, and systemic manifestations of wound infection and select appropriate escalation actions.
- Analyze patient, wound, perfusion, pressure, and treatment factors that can delay healing.
- Apply a structured wound-management plan addressing tissue, infection or inflammation, moisture, wound edges, pressure, perfusion, pain, and patient goals.
- Develop nursing interventions that support safe topical therapy, nutrition, mobility, pressure redistribution, and interdisciplinary follow-up.
