Overview
After completing this course, the nurse will be able to recognize pulmonary embolism, identify major risk factors, initiate an appropriate response to deterioration, and explain how clinical probability guides diagnostic testing. The nurse will also be able to compare anticoagulation and reperfusion strategies, identify important bleeding precautions and thrombolysis contraindications, and support safe discharge and long-term follow-up.
Objectives
Upon completion of this independent study, the learner will be able to:
- Differentiate acute pulmonary embolism, chronic thromboembolic disease, and severity categories based on hemodynamic status and right ventricular involvement.
- Identify clinical manifestations and acquired or inherited factors that increase the probability of venous thromboembolism.
- Apply a probability-based diagnostic pathway using validated decision rules, D-dimer testing, and appropriate imaging.
- Prioritize nursing assessments and initial interventions for patients with suspected or confirmed pulmonary embolism.
- Compare anticoagulation, systemic thrombolysis, catheter-based treatment, surgical embolectomy, and vena cava filter use.
- Recognize contraindications and major precautions for thrombolytic and anticoagulant therapy and plan appropriate follow-up education.
