Overview

After completing this course, the nurse will be able to distinguish acute kidney injury from chronic kidney disease, interpret key kidney assessments, and recognize complications requiring urgent intervention. The nurse will also be able to support evidence-based management of kidney failure, safely care for patients receiving hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis, and reinforce shared decisions about dialysis, transplantation, or comprehensive conservative care.

Objectives

Upon completion of this independent study, the learner will be able to:

  1. Differentiate acute kidney injury, chronic kidney disease, and kidney failure using clinical history, laboratory trends, and accepted diagnostic criteria.
  2. Assess a patient with advanced chronic kidney disease for volume, electrolyte, acid-base, hematologic, cardiovascular, medication-related, and psychosocial complications.
  3. Prioritize nursing actions for hyperkalemia, pulmonary edema, uremic manifestations, dialysis-access emergencies, and suspected dialysis-related infection.
  4. Compare hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, kidney transplantation, and comprehensive conservative care based on clinical and patient-centered considerations.
  5. Apply evidence-based safety practices when caring for hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis access.
  6. Teach patients and care partners about symptom monitoring, medications, nutrition, access protection, infection prevention, and when to seek urgent care.
