Overview
After completing this course, the nurse will be able to communicate respectfully, obtain a clinically relevant gender history, and provide preventive care based on anatomy, medications, age, and individual risk rather than assumptions. The nurse will also be able to recognize health inequities, monitor gender-affirming hormone therapy, identify complications of common surgeries, support mental health and safety, and follow current federal nondiscrimination requirements while verifying changing laws and policies.
Objectives
Upon completion of this independent study, the learner will be able to:
- Differentiate gender identity, gender expression, sex assigned at birth, sexual orientation, gender incongruence, and gender dysphoria.
- Apply affirming communication, documentation, privacy, and trauma-informed assessment practices when caring for transgender and gender-diverse patients.
- Identify health disparities and structural barriers that influence access, mental health, HIV risk, preventive care, and patient safety.
- Describe the purposes, expected effects, monitoring priorities, and major risks of feminizing and masculinizing hormone therapy.
- Recognize common gender-affirming surgical procedures, routine postoperative needs, and complications requiring urgent escalation.
- Implement anatomy-based preventive care and legally informed nursing practices without making assumptions about identity, behavior, or treatment goals.
